William Shakespeare, Playwright in Residence

He was not for an age, but for all time.
— Ben Jonson

William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwackshire. By 1592, age 28, he had moved to London and had established himself as an actor and dramatist. Shakespeare is most commonly associated with the Lord Chamberlain’s men, later known as the King’s Men. During his career, he wrote at least 38 plays, 154 sonnets, and two epic narrative poems.

Shakespeare moved back to Stratford in 1613, and died on April 23, 1616—his 52nd birthday.

Thirty-six of Shakespeare’s plays were published in what is now known as the First Folio in 1623. Since the initial publication 400 years ago, Shakespeare’s works have constantly been in publication and performance.

The Porters of Hellsgate are on track to being the first company in the history of Los Angeles to perform the entire accepted canon of Shakespeare’s works.
