A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR
“The Web of our Life is of a mingled yarn, both good and ill together...
All's Well that Ends Well, a phrase introduced into the English language by Shakespeare (or possibly Middleton), is not something we say when we get exactly what we want. Rather, it is what we say when we learn to accept and appreciate what we already have.
This is a notion that resonates with me deeply. I am about to turn 30, and as I creep ever closer that that transition, I find myself thinking more and more about preserving the things in my life that I love deeply--my partner, my home, my family, my friends, my cat--rather than shooting for the stars. It's a transition that all of us go through, in some way or another. We all learn, at some point, to stop looking at the horizon and to passionately reinvest in what's been staring us in the face.
We've set our production in the latter days of World War I. That earth shattering conflict represented a sea change in international and generational relations. It represented a profound failure of the elder generation to consider the needs of the younger, and as a result a whole generation of young men were wiped out. This dynamic is well represented in All's Well, a play whose parental figures are far too preoccupied with their own grievances to consider helping the next generation come into their majority. Their neglect has disastrous results.
Finally, All's Well is the story of a community putting itself back together through moments of grace. Early on in the process, I likened this play to the Japanese art form of kintsugi, where a piece of pottery is smashed and then put back together. The resulting lattice work makes the piece both stronger and more aesthetically pleasing. This is the process that each character in All's Well goes through. They break, and then they find the strength to put themselves and each other back together.
I can't think of a better message to share with the world right now.
Working on this production with this company has been nothing short of a revelation. Lean forward, and enjoy their beautiful work.”
— Will Block, Director
